FOREST RESOURCES

Forest is one of the most precious natural resources in Belarus. Total area of the forest fund in Belarus is more than 9.39 million ha, stock of growing wood is estimated at 1.6 billion m3. The percentage of forest land makes 38.5%.

During the last 60 years the percentage of forest land has almost doubled and is increasing at the moment. Its considerable growth both during the period after the II World War and the last 20 years is caused mainly by forest cultures creation (forestation) on the not fruitful former agriculture lands and other categories of lands. Forest regeneration on forest covered lands – on glades, slashes and burnt-out places – is permanently provided. Every year 20-25 thousand ha of new forest are created.

As a result of the planned regulation of the wood cutting volumes firstly of the final felling the total stock of forest stands has increased by a factor 1.6, the stock of mature stands made 197 million m3.
